Reblog because I almost posted a ranty post about TOMS shoes last month and also, you know, pretty condom wrappers and stuff.[img: 4 condom wrappers by the brand sir richard’s.]
I ordered a twelve-pack of these online from Food Fight. This brand is 100% vegan and they donate one condom to a developing country for every condom purchased from them. Awesome.
Click the image to get some for yourself!Richmond people: They have these at Ellwoods now, and they’re awesome. I highly recommend them.
Need.
Going off my birth control next month. I should probably invest in these just in case.Vegan condoms? Hmm
whoa whoa whoa whoa. whoa. whoa. WHOA.
“they donate one condom to a developing country for every condom purchased from them”
fucking seriously? no one has a problem with this? a condom company that feeds into the “population control” argument & thinks those in “developing countries” are the ones that need to wrap it up? how about they send some of these to white westerners like me, cause we’re the ones that are fucking the world up the most.
Seriously? It says nothing about “population control.” When I read it I thought immediately of AIDS prevention - a huge problem in the developing world - not “population control.” And the mission statement on their website says just that: A huge condom shortage is leaving millions of people susceptible to some of the world’s most preventable diseases. It doesn’t say “let’s help poor non-American people have less kids so there are fewer poor non-American people!”
The truth is that developing countries do need condoms - thanks to the tirelessly evil efforts of the Pope, sexual health information and equipment is severely lacking, even in areas getting other types of aid. There is nothing offensive, racist, or eugenics-y about sending much-needed condoms to people who are at risk for AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, and who might not have easy access to things like condoms because so much humanitarian aid is in the pockets of anti-sex “Christian” institutions.
Also, sometimes people in developing countries don’t want to have kids. No one is forcing condoms on these people, they’re helping make them available to people who want them and might otherwise not be able to get to them. Women, especially young women and women living in poverty, are at a huge advantage when they can control their own reproduction. Access to condoms helps women, whether or not they’re “white westerners.”
There are huge problems with this “Toms model” of buy-one-give-one charity. Huge problems. But this isn’t one of them. There’s plenty of nasty, offensive shit being said about non-white, non-westerners that it makes no sense to pick at free condoms as some sort of hidden eugenics agenda, which it isn’t. It’s obviously aimed at helping people prevent diseases and unwanted pregnancies, not swelling the ranks of “white westerners” by reducing the other side’s numbers.
